Abstract

Goal-oriented requirements engineering uses modeling as a means of better understanding a domain, leading to an overall improvement in the quality of the requirements. Regulations and laws impose additional context and constraints on software goals and can limit the satisfaction of stakeholder needs. Organizations and software developers need modeling tools that can help them assess the degree to which business strategies are effective in ensuring both that business goals are met and that there is compliance with any applicable laws and regulations. In this paper, we assess the capabilities of the Goal-oriented Requirement Language (GRL) in supporting such assessments. Our analysis is based on four scenarios involving health care business processes and compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
